My bio professor explained today that there are different protein families that are alike, but have different tasks--optins, for example, are a group of proteins that help us to see, actins, to move. He explained this in the most succinct manner: they are "similar yet distinct." I don't know, I just found it wonderfully descriptive in three words. Because it's so applicable to anything--a litter of puppies, different candy bars, the Kardashian sisters. It really enforces the feeling that, though we share a common thread, everyone is a beautiful and unique snowflake underneath it all. (No matter what Tyler Durden says.)
